Samsung Wallet adds Rakuten rewards: what the US rollout includes

Samsung Wallet’s new Perks experience connects Rakuten rewards and Samsung Cash for eligible US Galaxy users. Availability and eligibility vary.

Samsung is expanding its mobile wallet beyond storing cards. Its 28 October announcement introduces a refreshed Perks experience powered by Rakuten, connecting participating shopping offers with Samsung Cash inside Samsung Wallet.

A US rollout, not a worldwide launch

The announcement applies to eligible Galaxy users in the United States. Samsung says the experience is rolling out with online, in-store and dining offers, and that qualifying Cash Back can be redeemed into Samsung Cash on the Samsung Cash Card. Participating businesses, eligibility and features vary.

This does not establish an Australian release date. Having Samsung Wallet installed in another country should not be taken as confirmation that the same rewards or Cash features are available there.

What users need to check

Samsung’s announcement specifies a compatible phone running Android 9 or later and a Samsung account. Some Samsung Cash functions can require identity verification and further account information, and the announcement lists a US$5 minimum for Cash Back. The linked service terms and eligibility checks matter more than the promotional headline.

Rewards are a separate step from payment

Being able to tap a phone at a checkout does not by itself show that a particular purchase qualifies for a reward. Before relying on an offer, check the participating merchant, any activation requirement, exclusions and the redemption conditions shown in the app. Keep the transaction receipt if you need to query a missing reward.

Also review what information is requested when connecting a new service. A payment app, rewards programme and prepaid account can have different privacy notices and terms, even when their controls sit within one interface.

Why this matters for Galaxy owners

The update points toward a more integrated wallet experience: discovering an offer and accessing its reward without repeatedly switching apps. Whether it is useful will depend on the businesses a person already uses and the applicable conditions. This coverage explains the announcement; it does not recommend opening a financial account or spending more to collect rewards.
