iPhone Duo screen issues: what Apple has confirmed and what owners should do

Apple acknowledges an inner-display issue affecting some iPhone Duo units. We explain the reports, teardown findings and next steps for owners.

Updated 2 November 2026. Reports of cracked inner screens have become the biggest concern around Apple’s new iPhone Duo. Apple has acknowledged a display issue affecting a small number of devices, while a teardown has raised questions about the stresses inside the folding mechanism. Here is what the evidence shows, what remains uncertain, and what owners can do next.

What owners are reporting

Some early users have described cracks appearing around the central fold of the inner screen. The reports deserve attention, but social media posts alone cannot tell us how often a fault occurs. There is no reliable public failure rate in the reporting reviewed for this article, and a dramatic photograph is not proof that every handset has the same defect.

In its 26 October report, 9to5Mac published a statement received from Apple acknowledging an issue with the inner display on a small number of units. Apple directed affected customers to AppleCare for a replacement. The publication also reported that AppleCare+ is not required for this particular problem. Owners should still have Apple assess their device rather than assume every type of accidental damage is covered.

What the teardown adds

iFixit’s own teardown provides a closer view of the hardware. Its team investigated the hinge and display assembly, and discussed possible stress points that could help explain the reported damage. That is useful technical evidence, but a proposed mechanism is different from an established cause across all affected phones.

The teardown also describes repair-friendly features elsewhere in the device, including accessible components and battery-release technology. Those improvements do not mean the folding screen is an easy home repair. iFixit specifically highlights the complexity of the inner display assembly. A phone can be easier to dismantle in some areas while remaining difficult to repair where it matters most.

The latest service update

On 30 October, MacRumors reported obtaining guidance sent to Apple Stores and authorised service providers. According to that report, technicians were told to inspect affected devices and repair or replace them through normal service procedures. This supports the practical advice to contact Apple; it does not establish a recall or a precise number of defective units.

If your screen develops a crack or line

  • Photograph the visible problem and note when it first appeared.
  • Back up your data if the phone remains usable, and keep your proof of purchase.
  • Contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider for an assessment.
  • Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the phone to reproduce the fault, or attempting an improvised hinge repair.

Should buyers wait?

AJ Techno Freak’s take: buyers who rely on one phone for work may prefer to wait for clearer information about service experiences and longer-term durability. Buyers comfortable with first-generation hardware should examine the return policy and local repair arrangements before ordering. The important question is not whether every online complaint is representative, but whether the possible inconvenience fits your needs.

This is a source-based news explainer, not a hands-on durability test. We have not independently measured the failure rate or confirmed a universal hardware defect. Further complaints should be judged against verified reporting and Apple’s service guidance.
