ChatGPT Adds Animated GIF Creation With OpenAI Images 2.6

OpenAI Images 2.6 brings animated GIF creation to ChatGPT, alongside faster image generation and improved editing consistency.

OpenAI announced Images 2.6 on November 4, 2026, introducing faster image generation, improved consistency across edits and a new way to create animated GIFs in ChatGPT.

Turn an idea into a moving image

Users can describe a short looping animation or upload a sketch and ask ChatGPT to animate it. OpenAI highlights uses such as brand mascots, reactions, social posts and animated storyboards. The feature is rolling out, so availability may differ between accounts.

What else changes in Images 2.6?

OpenAI says the model generates images around 50% faster than its predecessor and is better at preserving details such as characters, products and branding through repeated edits. For developers, the company has introduced GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst, offering different speed and quality priorities.

Why creators should care

Short animated loops could help YouTubers and marketers create visual accents for social posts or concept presentations without a full animation workflow. They are less suitable for demonstrating real hardware behaviour unless the output is checked carefully: AI-generated visuals can invent product details or inconsistent motion.

AJ Techno Freak take

GIF support makes ChatGPT more useful for creators, but the real test is whether it can preserve a subject and background reliably from frame to frame. Start with simple movements and review the results before using them in branded work.
